Program Description
"I SPY MAGNIFY" is an interactive program for grades 1-8 based on the award-winning books by Alexandra Siy, which include BUG SHOTS: The Good, the Bad, and the Bugly; SNEEZE!; and MOSQUITO BITE. Featuring images and text from the books, the program challenges students to look closely and think like a scientist by forming analogies that relate to the stunning electron micrographs. Students will interact with the author as she discusses their writing responses and answers questions.
Program Format
1. I briefly introduce myself and my books.
2. I explain why magnifying specimens provides scientists with important information; describe how the electron micrographs are made; and show examples.
3. We play a game during which students look at an image, then answer the question: "What else does it look like?" Students write their answers down.
4. We compile a selection of analogies that we arrange into a group poem that relate to a theme.
5.We discuss how scientists might use analogies to solve problems.
6. I answer questions.
Objectives
The participant will
-learn how to look at highly magnified electron micrographs and relate structure to function
-create analogies to describe specific structures
-organize analogies into a theme based poem or paragraph
-gain scientific information/content about insects and human biology
-discover the relationship between science and art
