Early literacy and number sense are two of the most significant parts of early childhood education. Children's books are being used more frequently to teach mathematics. With literature, children are able to experience the wonder of mathematics in the same way they appreciate the wonders of a great story. By intergrating math and language arts into your daily instruction you will optomize learning in your classroom. Children's literature is an effective tool for mathematics instructions because it:
1. Incorporates stories into the teaching and learning of mathematics
2. Introduces math concepts and context in a motivating manner
3. Acts as a source for generating problems and building problem solving skills
4. Helps build a conceptual understanding of math skills through illustrations
The goal of this course is to give you classroom resources, activities, and instructional tips on how books can provide a rich context for understanding mathematical concepts. During the course you will identify ways to build number sense in students and promote practical classroom exercises that will encourage the wide range of learning styles that are present in your classroom. Participants will discover and use best practices for teaching language arts and mathematics in early childhood classrooms.
There is not a specific text required for this course, however, many relevant resources, videos, and articles will be shared with participants through an LMS system.
Each week participants will read/watch all assigned activities. At the end of each week, participants will respond to discussion questions related to the information presented that week from instructors and participate in any assigned course activities.
