Introduction to American Sign Language - a weekly engagement class

by  East Central Ohio Educational Service Center

Program image

American Sign Language is the language of the Deaf Community. This class, while offered this year as a weekly elective or special, will be delivered to your students in the manner in which students learn ASL as a world language - by staying in the target language! Expect high engagement between your students and the instructor, limited use of voices from both, and lots of learning and fun! Students will, at a minimum, be introduced to counting, colors, numbers, daily phrases, descriptions of clothing and foods, and many other topics.

Booking Information

This brand new offering will allow you to add the exciting and visual language of American Sign Language to your classroom weekly. Instructors are licensed as ASL Instructors and deliver HS language credit daily. Their schedule has allowed us to offer this once-weekly option for the coming year. Designed to be delivered to your classroom as a weekly special or elective, students/classrooms will connect each Monday, beginning September 9th, 2019 through (approx.) May 25th, 2020 (30-32 connections). Contact us if you would like to have the same block of time reserved at a different day of the week. The cost, for the year, is based on a once-weekly connection for the duration of your school year, and making some adjustments for weather-related cancellations, testing, etc.

Provider's Cancellation Policy

You are reserving your time slot for the year. Based on other requests, there may not be an option to move your weekday to another date/time during that week. Clearly communicate days in which you know you cannot meet at your scheduled time. This purchase includes the expectation that our teacher will meet with your classroom 30-32 times during the year, Mondays at 12:00 PM. We will be offering this format at the same time on other days of the week, so it is possible that frequent reschedule requests might not be honored. If you have to cancel on your day due to weather or technical difficulties, you will communicate that to your instructor, and best efforts will be made to re-schedule.

Program Details

Format

Each week, students will be expected to sign for the teacher, practice newly introduced vocabulary with the instructor, and be engaged throughout each session. The teacher will greet the class, review prior week's content, sign current events or daily activities, practice standard phrases and add new content each week. If you have a program for which your students would like to perform using ASL, please communicate that, in order that the instructor can build that activity into the weekly lessons. This will be a format in which all students sign weekly, full group, small group and individually in front of the camera, when activities encourage it.

Objectives

Each week, students will retain at least one new sign and/or phrase.

Building upon each week, students will be able to recall and produce signed vocabulary and also conduct finger-spelling when requested.

Students will also occasionally be introduced to a bit of deaf culture, as is grade-level appropriate.
