Storytelling through Kathak: Classical Northern Indian Dance

Teaching Artist Derek Phillips brings the 16th century traditional dance of Northern India to life in this beginner friendly program. Learning the expressive hand gestures, arm patterns, and footwork of Kathak, students will learn to tell a simple story through movement. They will also learn about the  cultural significance of Kathak through the centuries and how it can be used to explore the rich history of India.

Format

This session will include demonstrations of Kathak dance, instruction of basic Kathak symbolic hand gestures, arm patterns and footwork, as well as discussion of the historical and cultural significance of Kathak Dance.
