Get your groove on with Teaching Artist Christopher Yaeger as you learn basic steps from popular social dances. Learn about the basics of social dancing and its many varieties through discussion and then try it out for yourself. Social dances are an excellent way for students to build social skills, get moving, and just have fun! Classes can be tailored based on holidays, classroom material, etc.

Program Details

Format

1. Learn basic steps and foot patterns that are associated with social dance.
2. Perform movements in lines, solo, pairs and as a group
3. Have a discussion with teaching artist about what they have learned from the class.

Objectives

1. Engage in discussion about social dancing
2. Develop an appreciation for different dance styles
3. Develop partner and life skills through social interaction

Content Standard: 1: Identifying and demonstrating movement elements and skills in performing dance
-Students accurately identify and demonstrate basic dance steps, positions, and patterns for dance from two different styles or traditions
-Students demonstrate accurate memorization and reproduction of movement sequences
-Students describe the action and movement elements observed in a dance, using appropriate movement/dance vocabulary

Content Standard: 3: Understanding dance as a way to create and communicate meaning
