Format
Pre-activities will be emailed to teacher one week before program,
Observe different rock samples or pictures and describe their characteristics. Understand that rocks are identified by how they are formed and their unique characteristics. View Topographical maps and have students hypothesize how various land forms (mountains, canyons, deltas, etc.) may have formed.
Objectives
Discuss the role geologists play in our society and the various careers available in the field of geology.
- Review the three types of rocks, igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic and how they are formed
- Explore the transformations of rocks in the rock cycle
- Identify the characteristics used to ID rocks and use those characteristics and techniques to help identify an example rock.
- Compare and contrast weathering and erosion and their impact on the earth’s surface and landscape.
- Observe an example how water erodes the earth and creates depositions of material.

State Standards
Ohio Academic Content Standards K-12 Science - Grade 3
Standard: Earth and Space Sciences - Earth’s Resources
This topic focuses on Earth’s resources. While resources can be living and nonliving, within this strand, the emphasis is on Earth’s nonliving resources, such as water, air, rock, soil and the energy resources they represent.
Ohio Academic Content Standards K-12 Science - Grade 4
Standard: Earth and Space Sciences - Earth’s Surface
This topic focuses on the variety of processes that shape and reshape Earth’s surface. Earth’s surface has specific characteristics and landforms that can be identified.
• The surface of Earth changes due to weathering.
• The surface of Earth changes due to erosion and
deposition.
