Format
1. This program begins by showing the students examples of Native Americans masks from different tribes and explaining how masks are a form of puppetry.
2. We define culture and natural resources which leads us into our first learning activity-- comparing clothing, homes, and transportation of native american cultural groups of the U.S.
3. We do our first puppet building step.
4. We identify the Kachina chosen for the puppet design and it's importance to Hopi culture.
5. Students work on the second section of puppet
6. We discuss characteristics of Hopi culture-- "The Hopi Way," agriculture/farming techniques, food.
7. We finish the puppet.
8. We look at other Kachinas and discuss their roles in Hopi culture.
Objectives
- Compare and contrast native American cultural groups
- Engage in a discussion about culture and how it is defined by natural resources
- Explore the Hopi culture
- Create a working puppet based on a Hopi Kachina
- Develop an appreciation of another cultural group that makes up the U.S.
