Our forests have been destroyed by the logging industry, our soil is blowing away in “black blizzards,” and Americans are suffering through the “hard times” of the Great Depression. Discover how FDR’s CCC gave the USA a bit of TLC! Students become enrollees in a Civilian Conservation Corps camp, working together to earn a living for their families and rescue America’s vanishing natural resources.

Program Details

Format

1. This program begins with discussion of the Great Depression and unemployment activity.
2. We then discuss FDR, the new deal and alphabet agencies.
3. Students then travel back in time to experience all three types of CCC camps.
4. Program concludes with review and questions.

Objectives

Students will become familiar with Franklin Delano Roosevelt, his time period, and contributions.

Students will use primary resources to gain an understanding of the United States in the early 20th century, including the Great Depression and the New Deal.

Students will become familiar with the Great Depression and the New Deal.

Students will become familiar with the Civilian Conservation Corps, including who participated, what the CCC did, where camps were located, when the CCC took place, and why the program was started.
