Exploring Primary Sources: Abraham Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation

Two years of fighting changed what the war was about. Beginning in 1863, the North no longer fought only to save the Union but also to end slavery. Ending slavery was the only way to win the war and not have to fight again.

An examination of political cartoons and paintings that highlight Lincoln's role in emancipation. This program will introduce your students to a different primary source, through a guided inquiry process. The students will engage in primary source analysis and interpret the importance of the primary source, and place it into historical context. The source will be aligned to both the Virginia and national standards, and will also be paired with replica artifacts to help further illuminate the meaning. This interactive program will end with a period for questions and answers.

3. Time is allowed for questions and answers.

Objectives

The participant will be able to distinguish between primary and secondary sources. Also, the participant will be able to place the primary source in historical context.
