Program Description
LET'S READ, COUNT, AND SHOUT! is an interactive program for preK through first grade that uses Alexandra Siy's book ONE TRACTOR: A COUNTING BOOK to introduce children to numbers, word opposites, and discovering content in images. In ONE TRACTOR a child uses his imagination to count different kinds of vehicles in his sand box. But also included on each page is another main character, as well as word opposites that children learn to anticipate as they listen to the rhythm of the text. During this program children are encouraged to "shout" as they all read out loud, count, and explore each page.
Program Format
1. I introduce myself and some of the books I have written.
2. I explain that we are going to read a story together. They will see the pages on the screen. On each page they will be looking for a mouse. They will be listening for word opposites in the text.
3. As we read the story children will be encouraged to "shout" out the word opposite that is coming next in the text.
4. When the story is finished children will be asked to think up a pair of word opposites and raise their hands to share with the group.
5.I will answer questions.
Objectives
The participants will:
count from 1-10
learn many pairs of word opposites
learn to look closely at pictures in a book
find hidden characters in pictures
learn about the structure of a text, in this case it is a "circle" story
