Program Description
Explore the mound building cultures of ancient America in this program hosted by Dr. Bradley Lepper, Curator of Archaeology at the Ohio History Connection. Students will learn about the various types of mounds, how mounds were built, why mounds may have been built, what daily life might have been like as a member of these cultures, and how these cultures evolved as we visit various mound sites throughout the country.

Program Format
1. Students are introduced to the various types of mounds in the United States.
2. Discussion of the cultures that mound building cultures descended from will take place.
3. Students examine the lifestyle of those cultures.
4. Students will view video/photographs of at least four different mound sites.
3. Time is allowed for questions, answers, and review.
After participating in this program, students will have a better understanding of ancient mound building cultures and the value of examining mounds as historical sites and artifacts.

Topic: Early Civilizations
Content Standard 2: Early Indian civilizations (Maya, Inca, Aztec, Mississippian) existed in the Western Hemisphere prior to the arrival of Europeans. These civilizations had developed unique governments, social structures, religions, technologies, and agricultural practices and products.

Topic: Human Systems
Content Standard 8: American Indians developed unique cultures with many different ways of life. American Indian tribes and nations can be classified into cultural groups based on geographic and cultural similarities.
Content Standard 10: The Western Hemisphere is culturally diverse due to American Indian, European, Asian and African influences and interactions, as evidenced by artistic expression, language, religion and food.

Grade Six
Theme: Regions and People of the Eastern Hemisphere
Topic: Historical Thinking and Skills
