A fascinating variety of plants and animals make their homes in a land sculpted by strong winds and occasional rainstorms. Dark night skies, a rich cultural history, and surreal geologic features add to the wonder of this vast wilderness in southern California.

Program Details

Format

1. This program begins with an introduction to Joshua Tree National Park and its location
2. We then look at the National Park Service logo, the Arrowhead, and discuss its components and what they represent
3. The discussion then turns specifically to Joshua Tree National Park and the desert landscape contained within
4. Participants will be led on a mini "hike" of the desert plants observing adaptations allowing them to thrive in the desert
5. Students will ultimately participate in a guessing game about different animals commonly spotted in the desert and their adaptations
6. Time is allowed for questions and answers.

Objectives

The participants will:
-engage in discussion with peers and the park ranger about deserts
-make comparisons between the Mojave desert ecosystem and the ecosystem in which students live
-engage in ranger led activities displaying the diversity of the park
-understand how life adapts to thrive in the desert
