Sick Call!: Civil War Diseases, Hospitals, & Medicine

More soldiers died during the American Civil War from diseases than from battle wounds. What were the most common diseases, and how did doctors treat them? This program examines doctors, nurses, and patients in both the North and South and how they dealt with sickness and injury. Students will use an interactive program to help diagnose a sick patient and treat them for their ailment while also learning how surgeons completed war-time amputations.

Program Details

Format

1. The program begins with a discussion of the unsanitary conditions of a soldier’s life.
2. The educator will discuss common Civil War ailments and how they were treated.
3. The students will participate in an interactive game where they can diagnose and treat Civil War soldiers.
4. The educator and students will examine war injuries and learn the process of amputation.
5. The program will end with time for Questions and Answers.

Objectives

The participant will:
-Understand the unsanitary living conditions and improper hygiene that led to Civil War soldiers getting sick
-Identify the most common diseases and how they were treated
-Learn what a Civil War hospital looked like and identify famous war nurses
-Go through he steps of a war-time amputation.
