As visual literacy becomes increasingly important to 21st century learners, the ability to analyze and interpret photographs is a fundamental skill. In Picture This, students will learn how to analyze and interpret images by examining images from the Ohio History Connection’s collection and discover the importance of photographs as a means of recording history. 


Please select which image topic you'd like for us to incorporate into your program and list it in the special notes section of your program request. If no specific topic of images is selected, we'll use our default bank of 20th Century America images.

Program Details

Format

1. The students are introduced to an Ohio History Connection curator and they review the types of work and research done by an archivist.
2. Students receive instruction on how to analyze the content of various historical images.
3. Students examine images to interpret time, place and setting.
4. Time is allowed for follow-up questions.

Objectives

After participating in this program, students will have a better understanding of the significant role photographs play in retelling our history. Students will be able to examine, analyze, and interpret images in order to make connections to the significant issues of the period being discussed.
