Program Details

Format

1. Introduction of speaker and format for program.
2. Discuss the difference between photography images and portraits. Show different portraits of Washington by different artists.
3. Explain Mount Vernon’s plan to create three figures of Washington. Explain the forensic investigation of George Washington. Show stunning photographs of each step in the process as experts in the fields of science, technology, history and art worked together. Discuss the questions raised by their research.
4. Show primary source documents and how they are used in the book to make Washington come to life in the biography sections of the book. Discuss quotes from first person accounts that describe George Washington.
6. Discuss the popular image of George Washington in our culture. Interact with students to see if any of their perceptions of Washington changed as they learned more about his life and times.
7. Questions and answers about the project, research, or writing. Teachers to post questions in the chat box. The moderator will pose the questions to Carla.

Objectives

1. The participant will take a fresh look at the Father of our Country using new information gathered through a forensic investigation of George Washington that combine science, technology, history and art.
2. The participant will connect emotionally with George Washington as a real man, rather than just a green face on the dollar bill. I want to make this period of time real to them so they can imagine what Washington’s life was like—to feel his toothaches, smell his horses, and get a sense of the responsibility placed on him to create an army from a bunch of farmers, teachers, and booksellers.
3. The participant will understand they can weave together the worlds of science, history, art and language arts when they write informational text.
